July 2019

As our nation celebrated its birthday this month, the summer season is also in full swing. Barbeques, fireworks, and vacations are all synonymous with the summer season. As I start my fifth month as president of ACLM, I am still working hard to recruit new members and fellows. I also urge the membership to reach out to friends and colleagues to expose them to our wonderful organization. If the question of why join ACLM should pop up, then you can respond that ACLM is the only national organization that is composed of healthcare professionals and legal experts, working together at the intersection of law and medicine, to promote public and scholarly discourse on healthcare issues in the US. Being a part of the organization allows one to be informed, and also a participant in the future direction of healthcare. If our current members become active proponents of the College, then that enthusiasm and interest will flow into our new and future members.

The education program for the 2020 ACLM annual meeting in Scottsdale is being finalized and it is going to be more exciting than the Los Angeles meeting as the caliber of speakers and presenters are phenomenal. Please make sure to save-the-date and plan on coming to the desert on February 20 – 23, 2020. Don’t forget to invite your colleagues to this educational event with outstanding speakers from around the country who are scheduled to present at the meeting.

I want to remind members of the ACLM mid-year meeting, co-sponsored by WILM, which will take place in Oklahoma City on Oct. 18, 2019. A Day with the Judges will include discussion of ethics for professionals, various implications of prescribing opioids, and consequences of unprofessional conduct. Please make sure to plan on attending this event in October. For more information, visit www.wilm-ed.org.

Lastly, the President’s note will be on hiatus next month as I will be attending the World Association of Legal Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. The 25th Annual World Congress is being held on August 6-8, 2019 and the theme is Role of Medical Law in 21st Century: Collaboration Between Medical Law, Bioethics and Legal Medicine. If you are interested in attending, please visit http://wafml.memberlodge.org/25th-World-Congress-for-Medical-Law-Tokyo-Japan for more information.

Have a great summer and look for my note in September!
